Garage Exit Study
Pedestrians were detected on the sidewalk at an indoor
parking garage exit using two Microwave Sensors Corp., Model
1800 detectors. The sensors were directional and turned
on the eyes and illuminated the appropriate pedestrian symbol
depending on the direction that pedestrian was approaching.
The use of this ITS device decreased the percentage of drivers
that failed to look in the direction of approaching pedestrians
from 25% to 6.4% and increased the percentage of drivers
yielding to pedestrians from 58% to 82%. The use of the
device was also associated with a reduction in vehicle exiting
speed and motor vehicle/pedestrian conflicts.
